I always toast bread in a frying pan for some reason. Even though the toaster is right there. I think it's a vestigial habit left-over from when I was a teenager, I only owned two pieces of cookware: a rice cooker and a frying pan. I remember "frying" water every time I needed hot water. Good times. :)

i've never owned a toaster. can't see the point in another piece of gadgetry in the kitchen when the cooker's grill does exactly the same job :P

I feel the same way about a lot of kitchen stuff. Speaking as someone who loves to cook, I find it silly how there is now a shitload of "specialized" stuff, like you need a special knife or pot or whatever for every single little part of cooking. Anyone who watches home shopping channels knows what I'm talking about. You don't need a shitload of different sized and shaped pots and pans, it's just a waste of money. It's ironic how most people I know that own a gazillion pieces of cookware/cutlery often can't cook worth shit.

Like 90% of the time, you could probably cook with just the following:

• A chopping board.
• A medium sized saucepan
• A large pot that can cook pasta/make a casserole, etc.
• A frying/saute pan. If you have a big one, you can cook small or large portions. Tiny frying pans are useless and take up storage space.
• A spatula/turner and big a wooden spoon
• A colander
• Two good knives, a small one, and a large one.
• An oven
• A steamer
• Mortar and pestle
• Bakeware (cake tins, pans, etc)
• Two or three large bowls

Then again, different cultures have different cuisines. That might not apply to everyone.

Oh and sorry for further derailing this already off-course thread.
