It's just a part of the game which you can choose to do. The norm thing to do is to join a clan and score for them and work up the ranks, some clans have star competitions also where depending on how much score you get you can gain stars. Also clans ars a good place to socialise and meet new people on the game and also get game advice from them :)

to join a clan you click on there profile and then click apply and wait for the owner to accept you.

This is actually a pretty good question. Basically the only 'guaranteed' benefit is end of month trophies if you or your clan was good enough to receive them.
