Happy February everyone. The code for the scheduling and registration portions of tournaments is complete, so I've opened up registration for edition 1. Head on over to the homepage once you're logged in and register for a modest kudos fee.
Note that the actual tournament is still a ways off - it's scheduled for February 25. Future editions won't have registration this far in advance, but I figured I'd open the first one up early to let people preprare for the category ranges and to drum up some excitement for this long-awaited feature. :)
More details about all the inner workings of tournaments will be shared later, but here are some highlights:
- Every bot will fight every other bot within its category once.
- The bot with the most wins in a category is the category winner.
- Bots will receive trophies, kudos, and experience based on their performance within their category.
- There will be a clan aspect. I'm still working out the exact details, but it will involve trophies.
- The category you register for (which is based on your level at time of registration) is not necessarily the category you will compete in (which is based on your level at time of tournament).
- Unlike in bots2, you won't be logged out during the tournament. A snapshot of your bot will be taken at the start of the tournament, so what you are wearing and how your stats are distributed at that time will be what decides your performance.

Great news Ender! There's any chance to make more cats 200+? There is enough bots (more than one hundred) that justify it. Also, with the ratio whores that exist, it's easy to build 200+ bots...

I don't want to gain xp so I'm thinking whether to register with my scorers or not... Also, xp prizes would level bots and make them switch to another category, so the winner wouldnt be always the same bot. However, I think it would be more challenging to try to beat the champion.
Trophies by themselves would be sufficient as prizes imo. There's no harm to get kudos also. But xp isn't always welcome.

Why a bot built with the only purpose to win a category should not be able to compete on it forever? The best builds are more or less known except one trick here and there. The chances to win wont be 100%. If you can come with the same build as the repetitive winner you'll have 50% chances to win. However you must have to do it, not expect that bot to level and then win the category. I dont know why things must be moving. The tournaments are to test the knowledge of the players. There's lot of strategies. It would be amazing to beat a bot that won a category for a consecutive year for example. Imagine how you would feel doing that? If people cant beat it, they should reset and try another build.

Maybe it's an option to choose between kudo or xp price? Don't know if it's hard to make that happen, but the ones who don't want to get xp can choose for kudos instead.

Very much this. Consider tournament edition 1 an experiment. Nothing is set in stone. This is much more about crossing the hurdle of actually having tournaments in the first place, ironing out any obvious kinks and/or bugs, etc. There will come a time for tweaks and addons later.

This is exactly the purpose of the experience "prize". It's to prevent categories from becoming stale. Tournaments IMO should be as much about actually building your prize fighter as it is about the knowledge to build said fighter. The forced experience also creates some interesting trade-offs with regards to riding the level boundary of a category for maximum effectiveness vs. backing off a little and not having to do as much work for the next tournament.
That being said, again, nothing is set in stone yet. If this sort of thing is unanimously hated, it can be tweaked, but let's come back to the details later on.

Another con is fewer registrations - some people might not want to win or participate at all if that means leveling up...

I feel tournaments are much like scoring energy, you don't have to do it if you don't want to. Scared of leveling your scorer than don't register it, if you want to make a tourney bot than by all means do so. Tournaments are an added extra to the game and give another aspect to it, we will now have tourney bots, scoring bots and leveling bots! As long as it improves activity in this game then its a great addition!

In that sense, tournaments should not be related with clans. However, Ender said there will be trophies based on clan classification in the tournament. Of course there will be tournament clans (this one will be probably the winner), but why should scoring clans participate on it if the players don't want to level?
So the idea is to have two clan competitions?

Yeah pretty much, each clan could make a second clan just for tourney bots for example Eternal Tourney and that way there's a tournament clan race as well as a scoring one!

just a short question, how many fights will there be between each bot? Fights are based on stats but there is still the factor of luck(diceroll on damage etc)

Then you knew what to beat next time, and that would make the builds better and better ... well at least until we have the optimal build for each category..
On the other hand, I like the idea of everyone being all secret about their perfect build, maybe working together two or three persons in groups..

The winners will have his/her bot attacked many times after the tournament by players who will then be able to work out the winners build.

About luck... To win, you first need to do the best build. Then, if several players have the best build, the luckiest one will win. However, the builds will be similar but I bet they won't be all equal. So, the winner won't have just luck ;)

i think cat1 should be set permenantly for (lets say)top 50 Hof levels, its still almost 150 lvl's from No.1 to No.50 but it will keep things moving in top category and a bit more interesting
and i also think that more then one fight should be done

There could be more categories above 200. So 200-250, 250-300, 300+. Not bot around 200-275 stands a chance in cat1

But the idea for the tourney, in my opinion at least, is for EVERY person joining having the "CHANCE" to win. As it stands now, a person at 201 joining while the highest level bot joins as well stands no chance. That needs to be adjusted.

Unsure if its a bug or not but I leveled from 72-85 i entered tourneys when i was 72 but when i entered category 10 (81-90) i didnt have to pay the extra bit of money.

Answers to recent questions:
- The tournament code is actually quite fast compared to bots2 and assuming the performance on the bots4 server doesn't differ too much vs. running it on my personal computer, it should be over within a few minutes of the scheduled start time.
- Results will be posted automatically (probably not as an official announcement post like is done for monthly clan race results).
- A snapshot of your bot will be taken at the scheduled start time (plus maybe a few seconds for the process to actually run), so make sure you're wearing what you want to be wearing during the tournament at that time.

We're a little over 10 hours away from edition 1 and all the tournament code is in place! If all goes as planned (fingers crossed), the tournament will start at high noon (server time) and end 5 minutes later. A link to the results will be automatically posted to the home page (right next to where you originally registered).
Everything with the actual running of the tournament will take place as scheduled, but note that two small follow-on parts of it will be delayed until a few days after it finishes:
- Awarding of trophies, experience, and kudos
- Availability of individual battle results (i.e. how your bot performed against each bot in your category)

Some bots may have already leveled up, out of their cat. If Ender reruns the tournament, i think he'll reuse the same data.

Confirmed. All snapshot data is saved and unaffected by the bug, so the input to the new tournament will be exactly the same. You don't have to do anything to prepare. More details and an official announcement to come soon.
