I am getting the message that I cannot afford my new item, even though when I choose to sell my currently equipped weapon my total kudos are more than enough to afford the item ready to be bought from my order.

That's because your not even selling the actual item that you want to sell.

it sells when you are buying from the normal shop, shouldn't it be similar for an ordered item?

no because your not selling the items to the shop.

i understand that, what i don't understand is why it's set up differently, is there a reason?

When you buy something that you ordered it has to go into your stash first. I would also prefer being able to buy/sell at the same time since the stash is normally full.
