How to play this game effectively is not obvious when you first join. Would be nice to have an area to guide new players through the game, including what you need to do to compete.

I’m sure we have enough expert players who would give a little time to pull together some β€˜how tos’.

This would have the added advantage wiggin of changing the old language & embed preferred terms from the get go.

Great idea. I'd see it as something that sets out the basics of scoring, leveling, concept of freaking (for tourneys), and logic for the main bot types that players build.

Could be made this available through the documentation section, or some other method that people can easily refer back to (like the bots unauthorized site). The new player intro could refer people to our community guide, and then it's up to them how much of the bots4 encyclopedia they want to brush up on.

I stumbled across this thread which is probably still helpful for a complete newbie looking to build their first bot, but I'm sure we could do a much better job with a bit of effort: https://bots4.net/forum/2/2319

Make sure to include the information that you don't actually play on your bot, instead you make dozens of other bots to play on and lose to your "main" bot on purpose.

Myriad plays a lot on his main bot, I play a lot with Esvrainzas and also with my scorer Esv. Dumping isn't the only way to play this game Asmodeus.

Anyway, my favourite thing about this game is exactly that: the need to build resources, i.e., different types of bots each one specific for one purpose.

About the suggestion, ofc I agree with it.

Building reliable energy sources, protecting your infrastructure, and understanding your scoring range are the foundations of being competitive for higher ranks in the monhtly race.

Scorer

Your scorer is the bot you intend to climb the rankings with.

When choosing a scorer build and level range, look for:

  • A high number of easy-beat bots.
  • A healthy balance of trophy points (to enable the use of Dark Energy buffs).

A good scorer lives in a range where energy is plentiful and resistance is weak.

Easy-beat bots

Easy-beat bots are designed to lose.

They are usually built with:

  • Weak weapons
  • Low CON
  • High INT

These bots sit at the same level or higher than your scorer. Attacking them is one of the fastest and most efficient ways to gain energy.

Dumpers

Dumpers are lower-level bots built specifically to feed energy into your scorer.

Their purpose is simple: Generate energy. Die efficiently. Repeat.

For best results, dumpers should attack your scorer using:

  • DE3
  • A speed buff

There are two main styles of dumpers:

1. Protected Dumpers

Protected dumpers are designed to defend themselves against most outside attacks while still being vulnerable to your scorer. This is usually done by:

  • Equipping strong defensive gear normally.
  • Swapping to weakening gear before feeding your scorer (example: minus-CON armour).

Benefits

  • High EPH generation (commonly 60 EPH).
  • Difficult for rivals to gain energy from these bots.

2. Unprotected Dumpers

Unprotected dumpers are essentially lower-level easy-beat bots.

They are built with:

  • Low CON
  • High INT
  • Minimal defenses

Unlike protected dumpers, they rely entirely on being produced at high volumes rather than being able to survive incoming attacks from rivals.

Benefits

  • Extremely fast to build and mass produce.
  • No maintenance required (protected dumpers need to gain wins to maintain their high EPH generation).

These are excellent for rapid expansion and new-comers to the monthly race.

High-Level Protected Sources (β€œUppers”)

Uppers are protected bots positioned at a higher level than your scorer.

Like protected dumpers, they can defend themselves from most incoming attacks but can be intentionally weakened using stash items before your scorer attacks them.

These are premium energy sources:

  • Difficult for rivals to gain energy from.
  • Extremely valuable during late-race pushes.
  • Used by established clans to sustain heavy scoring runs.

For easy beat bots you can get away with using the ones in the 30-40 range and the ziz bots at level 100-101. Building your own is always a good idea, and it's best to have a mixture of all of them.

Just remember bots is about the long game, nothing can be achieved without some preparation time.

One last bit of input around scoring. Downloading the sortable fight list mod will really help to save time when navigating the fight list for energy targets. Find it here: https://bots4.net/forum/2/6211

& here's a quick guide to "freaking" that is still relevant: https://bots4.net/forum/2/7018
