Ofc that in Portugal the only sport that mathers is football so thats why Portugal only have 4 olympic champions (all from athletics btw) and 24 olympic medals in total (average of 1 per edition since the 1st participation of Portugal - 1916 I believe).

Ofc the most important factor is the investment that a country does in sport. Maybe India doesnt have a sport culture so few people dedicate to sport.

Well, China is known for the pression that the government applies to athletes, but even so, they lost with USA. I dont have a real explanation for that but it could be because the lower average quality of life of China. Since China is experiencing an expading economy and with all their population, I guess they will completely own everything in the next years (except bots4, which will be owned by philippines forever).

In the case of Portugal, we have a sports culture (the majority of the children pratice one sport outside the school, mainly football). The problem is that is very hard to be a professional athlete in portugal (except football) cause the actual financial investment isnt enough (and now with european crisis it got worse).

I practice athletics since 2001 and I got several national medals in the young categories. Now I cant spend much time training because it isnt worth it economically and I have a PhD thesis to do (science doesnt have much money too compared to other countries, but thats another story...). Maybe I could have been an olympic athlete (very distant from medals though) but actually I dont train enough for it.

Actually Botswana are the true "winners" of the 2012 olympics, they send 4 participants and won 1 silver. So if they had send 530 participants (like USA) they would have won 132,5 silver medals, bringing their total medal count a staggering number over USA! Well done Bots4wana.
