I thought I read somewhere that you can have 5 bots from the same IP address... if that is true, are you allowed to have more than one online at the same time?

At work so I can't do that. However, I can run IE and Firefox at the same time, which is a pain, but still allows me to do it. Just wanted to make sure before I tried it that it was okay.

you're allowed up to 5 bots online at once per IP

And the most likely reason it's not actively enforced is because it's not actively exploited. You will find it's tough to even use 5 bots at a time, going any more will just make it even harder.
