Yeah same for me. I imagine it's part of this Crowdstrike stuff that seems to have hit a ton of industries: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cp4wnrxqlewo

Yay for problems that fix themselves!

Relevant fact: bots4.net is hosted on Linode and edmazur.com is hosted on Powweb. Since only BU went down, I guess Crowdstrike broke Powweb, but not Linode.

Digging into those two companies led me down a rabbit hole that I was able to at least discover the most likely reason why. Linode uses Linus based servers, where as Powweb, along with a plethora of other site hosting companies owned by a single entity, utilizes both. And since the CrowdStrike only affected Microsoft Windows machines, that would most likely be why one was downed while the other was unaffected.

Linux*, not Linus.

Makes sense!

  • Powweb was basically my original web host (well, after things like Geocities and Maxpages anyway) from back in the early 2000s and I would say a lot less sophisticated than modern hosts. It's also more of a true web host in that you don't have full control over a (virtual) server. Not too surprising that there's Windows at least somewhere in their system.

  • When I started the bots4 project, I needed something with more flexibility and something I had more control over, so I went with Linode which is a VPS provider. I have Ubuntu (a flavor of Linux) installed on my server that I'm able to fully manage and customize.

Thanks for letting me know - should be fixed now.

Details: Powweb (where edmazur.com is hosted) recently upgraded my setup from PHP 5.5 to 7.4. This broke it. These are both pretty ancient versions (bots4.net is much more modern and runs on 8.2), but I wrote most of BU in the mid-2000s and haven't touched it much since, so this upgrade broke it. I manually downgraded back to 5.5 and things look to be working again now.
