01:42:42 < Ender> i'm trying to think of what open beta would really accomplish and i can't come up with much
01:42:53 < Ender> i don't think people would mind if i finished smaller features while the game was live
01:42:55 < Ender> i think...

What do people think?

as long as the game it self is working as it should i dnt see why not just skip it...and wat small stuff you going to do in the open beta?

Im glad only to have one wipe instead of two. I cant wait until we can make two bots though so I can experiment with different builds.

I'll survive one reset, but two is too much ;)

I very much doubt people would hold stuff against you if you'd skip ob and went straight live. If there's still minor bugs, so what? It's a free game.

Go for it :)

Yeah, I say skip the open beta. There is really no point to it, enough testing is being done with the closed beta I think.

Go for it! Correct me if I´m wrong, but did you not plan for open beta to serve as a load test more or less? Well it dosn´t have to be open beta to test that ;).

I disagree with everyone in this thread :)

Things aren't final yet, and if turns out something (like energy) doesn't work after all, and it's changed, a reset would probably be needed.

Experimenting with major parts of the game should be done in beta.

For the first couple of months it could still say 'Beta', as an excuse for bugs and changes. But there's no real need for another fixed period after which the game will be reset yet again.

Yes, some things will change, be added or need tinkering, but the basics won't change: building a bot will remain as it is.

Possible changes will most likely involve clan competition, and the start of a new month is an excellent time to incorporate those. No need to reset everyone to lvl 1 for that, right?

i agree wit alan and manny... open beta was so we can test every new feature already added with a huge amount of players to see if everything will work out.. like clan size, energy, and w/e else im missing (cnt tink rite now)

my point is if the live game is released and people make clans n we find out something is wrong or needs changing.. it mite affect those clans and players would probably get mad if there clan has to be reset or messed with for some reason.. idk im just throwing out my opinion..

or if we see that energy doesnt work well with alot of bots for some reason we may have to change the whole energy system..

im pretty sure there will be huge changes due to the increase of players.. either way we dont have to keep OB up for so long.. whats another month really

Heres a suggestion:

Why reset for open beta? Why not just let the people come in?

I think that the energy system needs to be explored further to see if it is truly what everyone wants/the best system. There are also a few other things I'd like to see implemented before release (the ability to quit clans, clan profiles, just some basic clan stuff). But why reset for open beta? Its still beta. Things dont matter as much here, but I do believe we need to at least test the energy system with 50-60 more players.

To give everyone a fair start, i think the game should be reset before it's released to the public.

After that, it could still be 'beta' for a while, but another reset for the 'official release' isnt necessary imo.

I think I will go through with the open beta after all. I was/am just anxious to get things moving, but that's no excuse to rush things. I understand some closed beta players will be less motivated to play open beta and deal with another reset, but I'm sure there are plenty of people not in closed beta that wouldn't mind going through it.

But whats the reason to go through with a 2nd reset, besides it being part of the original plan?

A game only needs a reset when certain players would have an unfair advantage otherwise. That's not the case when the game is open to public.

I want to have an official release where the game is finished and everyone gets to start at the same point.

i dont really like a second reset, just call it beta till while the work is in progress and release when its done

When the game is finished? It's never finished.. It just has a 'current state', and it will continue to develop, grow, stagnate, and ultimately die.

So making everyone start from scratch *again* just to have a ceremonial readysetgo moment, that's not a very good reason imo. And it's certainly not worth the risk of losing people who've started playing in open beta, and who then find their bot reset for no other reason than that the beta-sign was removed..

But you're the boss. Please let us know your final decision and time schedule though, because if there will be a 2nd reset, i'll probably skip open beta. (yes sounds dramatic and a bit whiny but i dont play this game for the joy of gaining levels ;)

Maybe if we could have unlimited accounts/bots then we wouldn't need to have open beta. loggin accounts could be like our own atm then add 1 each time you make another and the same number added onto your bots name ,your password could stay the same.

I personally like the idea of an open beta. It gives the anxious players an opportunity to play and get used to the adjustments while allowing ender to fix any bugs that may occur especially with a larger user base.

One thing you may not be thinking about is the fact that you can use the "grand opening" for a marketing tactic. I've said it a couple times, that if ender plays his cards right, he can use facebook to make the user base of bots the largest it's ever been. Having that grand opening marketing appeal is much more likely to get the attention of newcomers.

I agree it could be marketed. With "X days till opening!" and "pre-register here!" you can create anticipation.

Open beta is already open though. Where's the excitement in an 'official opening' for players in a game thats already open? What's in it for them? A reset, apparently ;)

I'm sorry, i dont want to sound naggy. But i only see downsides to a 2nd reset, and no practical reasons for it.

I'm not saying there shouldnt be a open beta. There should. And the start of ob requires a reset, naturally. But i dont think a 2nd reset is needed between open beta and the release. And i kind of feel the only reason a reset is being advocated is because it sort of makes sense with the word 'release'. Like it should be a 'fresh start'. A ceremonial moment to commemorate Ender's hard work. But that's no reason to flush accounts down the drain.. I'll praise Ender's work right now! Every day, if he wants to!

I already stopped playing as much because of the fact that by bot was going to be reset in a week and I had no decent targets for trying the energy system.

If we can go forth after closed beta into a world of the real game, I am all for that. Though I can deal with it if we have to reset again.

Srsly. I already suggested a comrpomise guys =p pay attention to me Im an attention whore.

Dont reset for open beta. It doesnt need to be 100% fair. Its still testing stuff. You'll get more info about the game if half the people are already high level and others are not (think about the game in 5-8 months time)

Srsly guys... have open beta but have it start like sunday or something. Reset energy score if you WANT to make the monthly race "fair" but it doesnt have to be.

In short: Reset for release dont reset for open beta

I agree with Jans, there is no real need for an Open beta. Clans can be played with while the game is live, I am pretty sure that happened during bots2?

The idea of a 2nd reset really doesnt appeal.. 1 is bad enough ;p

I've decided to do an open beta, but with no reset going into it. There will be a reset before the official release. No need to reset the current players twice.

This will let me do some load testing while finishing up and testing various missing features and then allow for everyone to start together for a built-up official release.

I'm traveling for the weekend and don't want to start open beta while I can't give it my full attention, so expect it Sunday or Monday night, depending on when I get home and have time to setup registration.
