I can never remember which of these possible variants is correct and always have to look at the help:

I blame Markdown for being non-intuitive (and I guess you can blame me for using it here). Does anyone have a pneumonic device for remembering this? Try as I might, I can't ingrain this piece of knowledge into my brain.

Also, in before Markdown line break rant.

I have the same problem, plus i noticed that it doesn't always work if the link contains 'bad characters' (underscores or dashes i think).

I gave up on that weird markdown stuff altogether and only use HTML.
