There are definitely slow times, but IRC is actually pretty active nowadays with ^Jane^. Based on those stats (5 hours ahead of server time), 5pm server time (ET) is the most active time of day. If you join and stay for just a few minutes, there's a chance you won't see anything, but if you keep chat on in the background (as most of us regulars do), you're almost guaranteed to see activity.

Also you never know when ender will show up and answer questions people have. There has been plenty of times that ender has taken the time to talk on irc about questions we have, bugs, and possible updates down the road. Just saying the chat is useful if you stick around long enough. Not jsut a few hours but log regularly and keep it up for a bit. Pretty useful tool if take the time to wait.

Not to mention the weird shit that happens
