For the past couple days, ^Jane^, the game's IRC bot, has been periodically stocking requested items in the showroom. An example is probably easiest:

[21:24:57] <^Jane^> The delivery girl turns her back with the backroom left open! (!take <item> to take an item)
[21:25:12] <L65> !take raven caw
[21:25:12] <^Jane^> [L65] sneaks a [Raven Caw] into the next showroom delivery.
[21:25:17] <Default> !take Behemoth Boots
[21:25:34] <Default> damn you L65

So unless you enjoy camping, come check it out! We're in #bots4 on QuakeNet. If you don't know what that means, the chat page has an easy way to connect.

Also note that this sort of integration between the game and the game's IRC channel is still in its infancy. It's something I want to do more of, so I'm very open to other ideas! Some possibilities I have in mind include having ^Jane^ give out short-term buffs, kudos, and even small durability restorations. If you have other ideas (within reason of course, nothing too overpowered, but lucrative enough to make people want to come to the chat channel), please share them here. Enjoy!

He didn't do it on purpose, it just happens because of the angle brackets I think.

It'd be an IRC trigger. Like when Jane talks and replies. When fishbot and catbot get into it.

Not much. That just makes you an auto-asshole.

I can't see why anyone would do such a thing. It's really pointless. - Ok. Somebody could argue, that it makes it harder for other players to camp (clan-opponents etc), but really?

And doing so, is just demeaning this beautiful little gem that Ender has put in to the game. I absolutely love it.

I anticipated this problem and already have a solution in mind for it. Instead of giving the reward to the first person to respond, it will use a lottery format. For example, it might wait for 60 seconds to let everyone who wants to participate do so without worrying about reaction speed. Once time is up, a winner will be picked. There could even be multiple winners, where the number of winners is based off the number of participants (details remain to be worked out). This solution neatly gets around the problem of people writing scripts for this and, if I put myself in the shoes of a player, is probably more fun than having to always be on alert and respond the fastest.

An example is probably easiest, so this is what it looks like now:

<^Jane^> The delivery girl turns her back with the backroom left open! (!take <item> to take an item)
<Scripter> !take item1

(immedietely)

<^Jane^> [Scripter] sneaks a [item1] into the next showroom delivery.
<Player> !take item2

Too bad for Player. I'm proposing something like this (the number in parentheses is the result of a 1,000-sided die roll and is used to pick the winner(s)):

<^Jane^> The delivery girl turns her back with the backroom left open! (!take <item> to take an item)
<Player1> !take item1
<^Jane^> [Player1] begins running towards the backroom, focusing on [item1]. (415)
<Player2> !take item2
<^Jane^> [Player2] begins running towards the backroom, focusing on [item2]. (79)
<Player3> !take item3
<^Jane^> [Player3] begins running towards the backroom, focusing on [item3]. (812)

(some time later)

<^Jane^> [Player3] sneaks a [item3] (812) and [Player1] sneaks a [item1] (415) into the next showroom delivery.

Also, make sure an item can't get multiple rolls. E.g. I connect to irc four different ways to get an 80% chance of winning a manic cranium vs someone that wants a satans claw.

I imagine it wouldn't be too hard to add code that ignores requests from the same host, but if people start proxying for this, it will unfortunately probably require manual intervention. We can figure out how to police that if that ends up happening, but my hope is that it won't.

Maybe it's worth adding one for winning something from ^Jane^, thanks for the suggestion.

Good thing we have strong bots to do the heavy lifting. :)

Yeah, it's based on the order seen by the bot, which isn't necessarily the same as the order seen by you, especially because I'm guessing IRC clients generally show your sent messages immediately.

I think this is my fault to be honest. Couple of days ago i accidentally crashed the server (by sending hundreds & hundreds of requests by dozing off whilst using hot-keys) ^Jane^ & Ender timed out in chat & ever since ^Jane^ hasn't returned so not sure if it's permanent or if its just were Ender hasn't restored ^Jane^

Thanks to Ender's new server ping thing, dunno exact name. He was informed immediately about the server crashed and restored the game ...

Also bmailed me as at first he wasn't sure if it was an intentional attack, which i can thoroughly say was NOT my intentions, just more where i was scoring when tired which is not the best of ideas ...

The commands only work while Jane is "active"

[22:53:50] <^Jane^> The delivery girl turns her back with the backroom left open! (!take <item> to take an item, 120 seconds remaining)
[22:54:50] <^Jane^> The delivery girl looks lost in thought. What could she be thinking about? (!take <item> to take an item, 60 seconds remaining)
[22:55:40] <^Jane^> The delivery girl begins turning around. (!take <item> to take an item, 10 seconds remaining)
[22:55:50] <^Jane^> The delivery girl closes the door.
[22:58:59] *** nooblek (webchat@89-201-226-29.dsl.optinet.hr) has joined #bots4
[22:59:20] <nooblek> !take Troll Shoe
[23:01:30] <nooblek> !take dagger
[23:01:36] <nooblek> alrighty then

Jane was open between 22:53 and 22:55, whereas you tried to request something when she wasn't. She'll open up once every 10-120mins, so wait till she "turns her back" and then !take whatever you want
