Did i understand things correctly that new players automatically get the Aura of Eternity buff to get them started?
I think it's great they get more XP and kudos, but the battle speed doesn't need to be increased for them, imo. Because at 300%, the battles go too fast to read along - which is fine for experienced players who dont look at each fight individually anymore, but for newbies, i think it's important that they do, to get a feel for the game.
I know fights take forever at lvl1 - which is a drag, and certainly can put off new players with short attention spans - but i dont think increasing the speed in which battles are shown is the way to go.
At 300% you don't have the time to follow a fight, so it can never be 'exciting' anymore "omg im almost dead, come on! kill him!". There's simply no time for that, and that takes something away from the game i think.
How about you get them smaller buffs? After the first 3 trains, give them a free XP buff. After another couple trains, a kudo buff. And let then figure out the rest for themselves? (at that level you get a bronze trophy for just about everything you do anyway)
td;dr 300% speed is too fast for newbies
And regarding the loooong fights at that level; with 300% more kudos, it's easier to get better equipment. This will speed things up fast enough.
I agree, that buff should be nerfed so that it only gives 300% xp and kudos.
I Agree that 300% is too fast for new players, would it be possible to adjust the con of infant or trainmate. This would have the same effect but would mean new players can actually read whats happening.
Alternatively the exp needed to reach lv 2 could be reduced so 1 train will rank you up to speed up the start of the game.
The 3rd option (my favorite) Create a reward system for new players where after their first train they receive a boost of kudos and exp from the botsunion as a welcome gift in the form of a lump sum eg. 100exp & 250kudos This will probably help people get hooked on the game as they'll feel they've achieved something
Just afew alternative suggestions. If anyone can see any flaws let me know :)
Or give the Aura of Eternity once you hit level 2?
I suppose that would make more sense....
However even then I think 300% is too fast for new players maybe they could get the Aura of Eternity at level 5? But that might still make the game slow for new players :/
I think that the increase fight speed is a great idea for new players, as 2-3 minute fights to start the game is truly a grind and i think it would drive away players.
The issue is not "fights take too long at level 1", but "300% speed makes fights look like they're fast-forwarded" - which isn't good for new players.
If (!) fights take too long at level 1, there are other ways to deal with that. Like tweaking Infant / Trainmate, or equiping new bots with better gear to start with.
But like i said, i dont think that's an issue at all. 300% XP and kudos will improve things quickly for new players, and when they see their bot get stronger/faster quickly, it will motivate them to continue.
Showing a long fight in fast forward won't do much for them though.
You can't really tweak infant or trainmate much. If we cut their hp to 10% then it will take 40 trains to get to lvl2 instead of 4 trains ;)
Best thing is just to do normal speed fights and boost exp more in the early levels.
speaking for myself, im just not buying that its the excitement of the fight log that attracts players to the game
I'm not saying it is. But fights shouldnt be barfed upon the screen for them.
I just trained on a lvl1 to see the fight speed. It's not too difficult to read. Just need to focus on the fight. Still took over 60 seconds on trainmate with the 300% speedboost :/
It's not too difficult to read.
That's because you've already read them all millions of times, you could probably read them with your eyes closed.
I must agree with Jans here, I remember as a noob how I read each line describing a specific act of violence with interest. Old players probably know all of them by heart now, but as a noob I didn't, I remember going reading the fight log after the fight was over, looking if I missed any.
"Maim with a satisfying grin" is my favourite.
Good point, and I actually thought the same thing when I did a level 1 test with the AoE buff. The text flies by and the battle still takes 40+ seconds. Probably not a game I'd want to play.
I'll probably readjust the newbie buff in such a way that the battle is over reasonably fast (10-20 seconds or so) and at a readable, even increased still maybe, pace. This would obviously require a new modifier such as +damage%. And possibly do all of this in conjunction with a nerf to Infant/Trainmate con.
There is always the option to "Pause"..
Do not nerf trainmate/infant con. Otherwise it will take ages to lvl up at level 1-2 without a buff (atm it takes 4 trains if I remember correct).
You should use "newbie buff" instead, basically aura of eternity modification. Like 300% kudos, 300% xp and like 115-120% speed, this should work.
FYI, a +exp buff and infant con nerf in tandem would both reduce the time per train as well as keep the same number of trains until level.
In all honesty I have no problems keeping up with the fight logs even at 300%.
Perhaps a bigger XP boost, yet no fight speed increase could suffice.
This still on the list? :)

This would give newbies the change to first learn the game, and not having spoiled the best buff there is in their first half an hour because they didnt know how special it was.
or unlock it at level 5? (2?)
Maybe a new bot could start off with a weak weapon already equipped. like in bots2, when a new bot would automatically be equipped with daggers.
Nah, I like the slowness of the game's start. :)
What if you gave a %dmg buff untill you hit lvl 5 (when you can fight other players if i remember correctly).this fixes the speed and the exp problem? no?
This probably bears looking at with all the advertising I've been doing for the game recently. A lot of fresh faces are looking at the game and it has what I think is a really poor newbie experience. Let me kick around some ideas and see what I come up with.
The problem I have with newbie experience is the level of time/money you have to put into the game to be competitive... In bots2 you could build one bot and compete. Bots4 is a completely different game, and I love it for that, but - but - you need ratio whores, win dumpers, dumpers, and your main bot which has to be freaked to protect the energy you've channeled. I don't know about the experience at lower levels - I haven't been a complete newb in years (still a newb at heart though) so cannot comment... just stating that IMO the game as a whole needs to be more accessible but it needs to be done in a way that doesn't take away from established players.
That's a much bigger and more controversial subject than what I'm referring to; I'm referring to a totally new player's experience/gut reaction to/impression of the game within the first few minutes.
first few minutes always takes too long to do fights. it gives the impression of a very slow paced game
Maybe, let them pick a starting "buff".
- 300% Exp for 100 fights
- 300% Damage for 100 fights
- 300% Speed for 100 fights
- 300% Kudos for 100 fights
- Start with 1000 Kudos
Maybe they can pick 2.
I dont remember my first impression in bots 2. Does anyone?
My friends were talking about some game during class for a few days. Finally got them to talk. They were like "Get heavy cutlasses and youll be awesome". I got heavy cutlasses in the first 20 minutes. Then got to level 50ish that night. Told them the next day, didn't believe me. They ended up quitting a week later.
Well we can just assure them battles don't last that long for long. And besides there's the aura of eternity for them. If they care enough to read they can scroll through the fight after it's completed. Bake speed obviously didn't affect any of us here negatively...
no one is forcing them to use it LOL
