You may not remember because you were a kid at the time, but plenty of help was sent. European countries sent specialist excavation machinery, rescue workers, etc. And not just 9/11. I say hi to ppl in elevators.. it's a common thing. You have to share a tiny space for a short period of time, and the hi is an acknowledgement of the other person. "Yes we'll be in each others personal space for a bit"

Options to make it a little more awkward:
- say 'hi' while staring at the other person's groin. Adding enthusiasm will add more awkwardness
- stand close, 20cm, face the person, stare him/her in the eyes without blinking
- fart, and own it
- try to hide in the elevator

I say hi in the elevator too. But I dont wish to meet Jans in one considering his other points..
