The first number is the absolute number, which indeed cannot go negative. This says how much energy in total i have, while the second indeed says how much energy i gained or lost during this month.

and the latter number can go negative, since you gain 20 energy every hour. If that is won from you, you've lost 20 energy. Example: 100(-40) This dude has 100 energy, but lost 40. So if he had not been attacking/attacked, he should have 140 energy, equivalent with 7 hours in a clan...
