Finding reliable Internet access while overseas has been rather hellish. I'm currently on a prepaid mobile broadband thing for 3 euros a day, but there's a daily bandwidth cap of 200MB. I didn't learn about this cap until yesterday when I turned my netbook into a mobile hotspot so the people I'm traveling with could share the connection.

So...do you people have any tips for reducing bandwidth consumption? I'm pretty much exclusively using a web browser. I've written a small script to monitor usage and these are the precautionary steps I've taken so far:

  • Temporarily switched from Chrome to Firefox because I've heard Chrome's adblock just hides ads as opposed to Firefox's adblock not even downloading them.
  • Disabled images.
  • Enabled NoScript.
  • No youtube/grooveshark/netflix/system updates.
  • Disconnecting when not in use.

Did I miss anything obvious? I'm running Ubuntu in case it matters.

As well as using adblock, you can get one of those edited HOSTS files that completely blocks ads from even showing up as it simply re-directs traffic from those sites to home.

Other than that, I durno.

And obligatory "What the fuck do you mean you people"

I just ran this site on bots4

  • setting your images to PNG.
  • Use less objects (currently 24 on the main page)
  • 6 scripts - combine them to run faster
  • the file sizes are huge, compress them more.

That's the basics.

Um, I'm pretty sure he's not running bots from his notebook:

Disconnecting when not in use.

I don't think it would be wise to invest in stars if Wiggin was running this fucking thing of a notebook while travelling.

Err yeah, just to be clear, I'm talking about reducing bandwidth usage of a personal connection, not for the game server. :)

Erica, isn't that effectively what Firefox's adblock does though? Maintains the ad domain blacklist and completely prevents requests from going to them? I could monkey around with my hosts file if necessary, but I've already manually edited it so I'd prefer not to if possible.

If a site that you regularly use has a mobile version that doesn't sacrifice too much functionality, I'd stick with that version for the time being. But you probably already thought of that.

there is probably a way to make it so the restricting component thinks you are not using as much as you really are:) but that is most likely going to get into illegal territory...

It's not like filling in a tax form where you can lie about numbers..
