Don't you think, Neps, that changes in number of polar bears over the last 40 years has more to do with randomness or perhaps even more with how much we hunt/protect these animals?

Oh and yeah, we Dutch are going to feel it first for sure. Hmhmmm... So what about Katrina, Sandy and others? We dont have that here, we are smart enough not to build our houses and offices right next to the sea :)

i watched an interesting documentary about global warming that predicted a new ice age. basically the hypothesis was that the melted polar caps would move or stop the gulf stream & thereby influence the weather.

or something like that ...

i do know that all this talk is pure hypothesis. the change in weather may be down to pollution, cfcs etc but it could equally be just part of the natural cycle of the planet.

Tragedy of the commons: Nobody will give a shit or change anything they do, even if irrefutable proof is presented.

I disagree. people are far more aware of how their actions or inactions impact the planet. 30 years ago household recycling was something done by hippies now everyone does it without thought.

so change can happen, itt just takes time.

different subject but connected ... hopefully this horsemeat debacle might prompt people to think about the food that they buy & encourage them to cook instead of relying on ready meals.

Recycling lol. More energy is wasted and pollution created than filling landfills would cause. There's few things that are actually worth recycling, like aluminum. Plastic is just a complete waste to recycle, it costs more resources to recycle it than to produce new.

It's not like we are exactly running out of space on Earth, but landfills have their own problems such as gases being released into the atmosphere and mercury and other heavy metals leaking into the soil and water table.

Good point Gpof. You are saying that getting new plastic is cheaper than recycling it. Yes, that's true. But this does not mean that it is a waste. Instead: we only have a limited supply of raw material so we cannot endlessly keep making new materials. The real costs of plastic are not integrated in the production price, like waste etc making the price appear lower than it (actually) is for society. In other words: plastic seems cheap (and it is cheap to buy) but in the end we're better of raising the prices of new plastic (by integrating a waste tax oid) and recycling more.

Then how about the resources it's costing us to recycle the plastic, the oil for the transportation for example. I was saying it's a waste because of the opportunity cost, which is far greater. We're spending other, much more limited resources to preserve plastic. I'm not entirely sure what plastic is made of, but from what I've read I highly doubt we'll ever run out of it in within even a million years. Paper is undoubtedly unlimited so I won't even rant about that one.

Paper unlimited? Theoretically, yes. Practically? No. Our consumption of wood is extremely large if you look at deforestation in Indonesia and Brasil for instance. Deforestation leads to a variety of effects such as a shortage of rain, decrease in biodiversity (which is much more important than just protecting animals because we like them), and erosion.

Plastic is actually made of crude oil, so you energy story is easy to answer. Does it take more oil to make plastic or recycle it (making every other aspect of recycling irrelevant). Even then the answer seems to be that recycling is less costly. See for instance:

No need to train little Gpof about the environment anymore Mainor :) I took care of it and gave him way too big of a lesson lol. If I got into this conversation it truly would be unlimited so I won't. Nothing is infinite of course. Hell the universe will run out of heat one day. It's far, far off but it's just an example.

Recycling is just a way of keeping things that don't degrade well out of the landfill and on store shelves in one form or another. We don't recycle all the plastic we create. Actually very little. Like your first article said Mainor, of the 2.7 million tons of plastic PET bottles on U.S. shelves in 2006, four-fifths went to landfills. But the problem is more economics than anything else. You want jobs to make the plastics but also jobs to recycle that plastic. In an ideal world they would balance each other. But demand is too high and recycling rates by the consumer is low. Ideally the landfills and recycling companies would work together in unison and recycle all the waste plastic but that's a huge undertaking and not very cost-effective.

There really is no solution to the plastic problem. Well except not using plastic. But we love it so much <3

Deforestation? There are tree farms specifically grown for the purpose of making paper. The more paper we use the more trees there will be. It's a simple matter of supply and demand. Trees are a renewable resource and are just as practically unlimited as they are in theory.

haha just because someone uses the term bullshit a lot doesn't make their assertions correct.

yes wood is a renewable source. but is coal, oil, gas, phosphorous? recycling yields significant energy savings. that is why i recycle.

anyhoo my original point was not about recycling, but about the change in attitude & perception of it. people can change.

actually both coal, oil and gas are all renewable .. it just takes more time than say wood. and saying that recycling isnt cost effective because you use oil for transporting is just the same old lame excuse we always use towards everything new, that we now we have to do eventually, but dont want to do right now since its not politically "safe". we could make a pollution free world today if we wanted to, but we just choose not to, rant over.

What do you not understand in the term deforestation Gpof? try googling that term once under pictures. You'll see what i mean.

There are tree farms specifically grown for the purpose of making paper. The more paper we use the more trees there will be. It's a simple matter of supply and demand.

Yes there are treefarms. Do you know how much they produce? Only a small portion of the total demand for wood. So yes, supply and demand makes sure we cut down rain forests as the demand is there but not the supply. In other words, wood is not a renewable resource because demand far exceeds (natural) growth. The same holds for oil as is posted above, its also renewable. But the earth only produced enough oil yearly to supply around 400 cars (yes, 400).

perhaps you think that paper bearing the FSC logo is renewable paper for instance. It is not. Pay close attention to it, and it most likely will say it is a mix of renewable sources. That actually means that only a part is from renewable sources, and can be as low as a mere 1% from certified forests. What a joke.
