Anyone know a really good place to learn either one of these?

I've attempted C++ and Lua. Never really made anything past some loops. I'd rather not "enroll", in an online school.

Free tutorial places that are up to date, like 2012+ ?

I prefer the sam teach books over books for dummies. Ive got books for alot of different types of coding.
