So as you guys can probably see from my profile im a sous chef atm and as much as i love food and waitresses the pay is absolute garbage.

So in my spare time I am learning a bit of code using ruby and to be honest i think I am picking it up really well (the basics anyway) I understand most of the functions now and their uses, but I am wondering is ruby the best language to learn and start from?

Any advice/tips would be highly appreciated :)

Depends what you want to go into really. Being able to program is a skill that allows you to pick up languages easily, so there is no "wrong" route to go down, as long as its a reasonably "standard" language (which ruby is).

A good site to learn (certain) languages is Codecadamy, it has tutorials on lots of stuff, including Ruby apparently, though I can't vouch for those specifically. I used their HTML/CSS/JavaScript stuff and they were awesome.

Whenever you're stuck with why something won't work, type something vague into Google and append "StackOverflow". Anything like "java copy object stackoverflow" will link you to someone whos had the same problem as you, with experts who helped him solve it.

Course, plenty of bots players are nerds so you could always ask here if you get stuck with something specific.
